Can I Get High on CBD Oil?

As the cannabidiol (CBD) community continues to expand exponentially through its increase in accessibility, there seems to be a universal curiosity on any CBD newcomers mind: Can CBD oil get you high?

This valid question ultimately ponders if CBD has similar effects to its cannabis plant roommate, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Before consuming any substance, it’s important to understand exactly what reaction it could have with your body.

UNVEILING THE MYTH

A common misconception about cannabis and hemp is that consuming any part of either plant will cause a psychoactive high rooted in your brain. When it specifically comes to CBD extraction from either of these plants, this is simply not true. Here’s why:

CBD, THC, & YOUR RECEPTORS

First and foremost, THC and CBD are two completely different cannabinoids. Thus, they interact with your endocannabinoid system and its receptors in entirely different ways.

To explain, your brain has two different types of cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. THC bonds the strongest to CB1 receptors, which are found in:

  • Nerve cells in the brain
  • Spinal cords
  • Reproductive organs
  • Gastrointestinal/urinary tracts
  • Eyes

This bond produces several different euphoric effects, depending on which type of cannabis strain is consumed.

Unlike THC, CBD does not bind to either of these receptors. Rather, cannabidiol acts against cannabinoid agonists and interacts with separate receptors within the body, specifically including HT1A. This receptor links to your neurotransmitter serotonin, which contributes to your feeling of well-being.

Since CBD is non-psychoactive, it may actually reduce the bond THC holds with your endocannabinoid system. Thus, CBD may actually reduce the euphoric effects of THC when consumed together.

CAN HEMP CBD OIL GET ME HIGH?

A hemp plant does not contain more than 0.3% THC per dry weight; this allows it to be distinguished from a cannabis plant, leaving it unlisted as a schedule-1 drug.

That means hemp alone has no place on the spectrum of “what will get you high” because it’s THC potency is 33 times less than the least potent cannabis strain. CBD originating from hemp will never get you high because hemp contains an irrelevant amount of THC to begin with.

CAN CANNABIS CBD OIL GET ME HIGH?

Cannabis is naturally rich in THC: a phytocannabinoid that interacts with your endocannabinoid system in a way that produces a euphoric experience, aka, gets you high. In cannabis, CBD is mostly found in the trichomes of the female plant.

Similar to hemp, cannabis plants offer the ability to extract CBD as an entirely separate substance from THC. Which, again, will never produce a psychoactive high when consumed.

However, it is important to note that consuming a cannabis CBD/THC hybrid oil will produce a psychoactive high. Be safe in knowing that any form of significant THC consumption, even when combined with non-psychoactive CBD, indeed will get you high.
