There’s one thing that a lot of CBD oil ends up missing:
They should actually taste good.
Imagine you’re a little kid, you’re sick, and your parent wants you to swallow down some nasty syrup. Sure, the doctor prescribed it, and it’s going to make you feel better, but is the flavor really worth it?
Believe it or not, that same consideration happens for adults. In fact, a startling number of organ transplants fail because a recipient stops taking their immunosuppressant medication.
Now, when it comes to CBD oil, fortunately, you have a wide range of flavor options. But they’re not all created equal. With all that selection comes an increased risk of getting a batch that tastes more like lawn trimmings.
Fortunately, it also means there are some fantastic options out there that are effective and delicious.
CBD oil starts with the lovely hemp plant. After it’s harvested, it goes through an extraction process to yield that lovely honey-toned oil.
After extraction, you’ve got a compound that’s chock-full of health benefit but not terribly delicious. Maybe you’ve tried an oil like this. A lot of brands out there have that traditional, earthy flavor.
And even if there’s some fun flavoring tossed in there, the oil can still taste bad.
And this can actually really inhibit consistent intake.
So, what’s the best way to avoid this?
Since the natural flavor of hemp is so strong, you have to work with it in order to work around it. In our Calmness and Wellness tinctures, we start by focusing on terpenes. These are compounds that naturally occur across a wide range of plants.
Know the smell of pine? What you’re actually smelling is the tree’s terpenes, and they’re what gives each strain of hemp—as well as its cousin the marijuana plant—their unique scent and tang.
We use a proprietary blend of terpenes to brighten the flavor of our tincture’s oil, and then add a splash of sweet citrus.
A remedy that isn’t just effective but delicious has an incredible advantage over those we’d rather avoid. This is especially true of CBD. Why?
There’s a name for it:
Each and every one of us has an endocannabinoid system. It’s linked to our central nervous system and produces chemicals (cannabinoids) that contribute to a host of awesome effects.
By taking CBD every day, it builds up in our endocannabinoid system, and as our bodies grow more accustomed to its presence, it starts getting used to producing those benefits.
So, each day you drop that lovely tincture under your tongue, you’re not just going to feel the benefits of that single portion. You’ll also reap the benefits of the drops you had days prior. A little pop of delicious citrus flavor makes this process super enjoyable.
What CBD does is encourage your body’s natural production of endocannabinoids, and can dampen the activity of some cannabinoid receptors. Relative to THC—the active cannabinoid in marijuana strains that produce psychoactive effects—CBD has a much milder effect on the receptors.
Instead of mimicking them, it binds itself loosely to the CB1 and CB2 receptors.
It’s one reason we’re such big fans of a full-spectrum oil. This increases what’s known as the Entourage Effect, wherein each cannabinoid, flavonoid, and terpene’s abilities are increased by the presence of those around it.
The benefits you feel from CBD are as much about what you don’t feel as they what you do. It’s common to feel the effects on your shoulders. You’ll also note your muscles begin to relax.
CBD’s also known for promoting a calm mind and more restful sleep. The compound also allows for full-body relaxation that starts in your mind and flows outward into your muscles.
As with anything that’s good for us, it can be hard to remain consistent, even if it tastes like delicious sweet citrus.
Creating a steady habit with CBD starts with knowing what exactly it is we’d like to affect with its use, and ends with the feeling of well-being we so sorely desire.
But how do we get there? Here’s a two-pronged approach:
First off, check-in with yourself. Are you anxious? Are you feeling tight? Where in your body do you feel that way?
Having a clear idea in mind with what you’d like to accomplish with CBD will help immensely in your process of well-being. The modern world is full of distractions, pings, notifications—all of it vying for your attention.
We’re in many ways more in touch with the world around us than past generations, and this can add layers of added complication that can be really difficult to figure out how to think and feel about it.
When you give yourself the chance to breathe and really check-in, you can increase your ability to listen to the space in you that needs the most help.
But what if having a clear idea in mind is the thing that presents the most challenge?
The practice of journaling, on its own, can be really beneficial for mental health. It helps control your symptoms and improves your mood by:
When you have a problem and you’re stressed, keeping a journal can help you identify what’s causing that stress or anxiety. Once you’ve identified your stressors, you can work on a plan to resolve the problems and reduce your stress.
As you start to integrate CBD into your daily regimen, take note of how it makes you feel. Each day you sit down to write, focus on how you’re feeling at that moment. This is your time to check in with yourself.
As you make these contributions to your journal each day, you’ll eventually have a log of events and how you’re feeling about them. It’s like a built-in reminder, great for evaluating how CBD is working for you.
After a few weeks of taking CBD every day, look back at those earlier entries. Do you notice a difference in how you’re feeling?
Uncertainty seems to be the norm these days. As we’re all figuring out how best to move through each moment, it’s important to get—and keep—your head right.
