How Much THC is in CBD Oil_

CBD essential oil seems to be everywhere in the wellness market these days, but how does it work? Unlike some supplements, CBD essential oil doesn’t have decades of research behind it to prove what it does—or even if it actually works.

Thankfully, with the legalization of hemp farming and essential oil distribution, more and more independent studies have emerged. We now have a better idea of why CBD essential oil deserves a spot in your medicine cabinet.

Why Do People Use CBD Essential Oil?

A woman staring into spaceThe cannabis plant has a long and sordid history. Since the 1960s, when THC was discovered in the plant, there was a full-scale campaign against cannabis trying to convince people that it was a fatally risky plant. That panic still has ripples today, despite the fact that hemp oil has been used for thousands of years as a wellness product.

Thanks to a bill passed in 2018, however, it is now legal to grow hemp so long as the crop contains less than 0.3% THC. CBD oil is legal to sell in most states, and it has rapidly grown in popularity.

Mainly, people use CBD essential oil for pain relief and mood regulation. This is why CBD trials have been so successful with patients who suffer from fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. But these aren’t the only applications for this product.

Because it’s rich in protein and omega fatty acids, CBD essential oil is a favorite in hair and nail salons, muscle and joint relief topicals, skin moisturizers, and even in the treatment of bacterial infections.

And since CBD contains none of the psychoactive compound THC, it doesn’t get people high. Overall, there’s very little risk to using CBD, even if it still hasn’t been approved by the FDA.

What Is Essential Oil?

Essential oil is a concentration of a plant’s chemical compounds. Under normal conditions, these compounds would just evaporate, but essential oils distill or extract them into an airtight bottle to be used later.

The history of essential oils spans back nearly 1000 years. Since that time, people have found ways to extract compounds from all kinds of plants. While many people use essential oils for aromatherapy and cleaning, others find that they provide effective relief for physical ailments.

What Does CBD Essential Oil Do?

While all essential oils affect the body in some way or another, CBD essential oil is special. Back in the 1990s, scientists discovered the endocannabinoid system (ECS)—a system common to all mammals that span back millions of years in evolutionary history. The ECS seems to have hubs all throughout the body, and CBD oil can trigger that system into action.

When cannabinoids are used to kick start a chemical reaction, the body responds with feelings of calm and relaxation. This may be the reason that CBD essential oil has become a treatment of choice for patients with severe epilepsy—the drug helps to relax the central nervous system in a way that reduces the frequency of seizures.

So How Does CBD Essential Oil Work?

A tincture of CBD oilImagine you’re getting a massage. Your massage therapist only has a limited time to work before their muscles get tired and they have to stop. Right as their time runs out, someone enters the room, gives them an energy drink, and your massage continues on uninterrupted.

In this scenario, the massage therapist is your ECS and the energy drink is the CBD essential oil. With a supplement of CBD, the body’s own endocannabinoids are able to massage neurotransmitters in your body for longer than they normally could.

Because CBD oil isn’t psychoactive, it can be used in your daily wellness regimen, just like a daily multivitamin. Whether you take it as a gummy, under the tongue as a tincture oil, or you vape it for the fastest response, there are many ways to make CBD part of your life.

Is Essential Oil Better than Other Forms of CBD?

As a supplement grown from a plant, there are some parts of CBD that are best left intact. The most effective way to do this is to extract the plant’s unique traits into an essential oil.

Every plant wants to spread its seeds around and grow more of itself. This is done by getting animals to eat its flowers and spread seeds in their waste later on. To do this, the plant has to attract diners.

How do they do it?

With terpenes.

Terpenes are the botanical compounds that we smell and taste in plants. There is usually a variety of terpenes in each flower, and each one of them has a unique effect on the human body. Some have citrusy flavors while others are minty. Some relax while others energize.

Because of the wide variety of effects on the body, keeping all terpenes intact should be a priority for anyone using a supplement. Unfortunately, some people choose to isolate CBD from its terpenes, removing all those extra luxuries Mother Nature included.

Essential oil is the best way to get the most out of your plant-based supplements. During extraction, these terpenes remain present and available to your body. As a result, many CBD essential oils have a greenish color that lets you know how much of the plant has remained in your supplement.

Is All CBD Essential Oil the Same?

A vial of CBD and tinctureLike any other supplement, the quality of the product you buy will have a lot to do with how the plant is grown and how its compounds are extracted. For example, some companies have grown cannabis plants with synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, directly affecting the quality of the terpenes—even the quality of the CBD itself!

Other vendors buy isolated CBD at wholesale prices, toss it in with a bottle of vegetable oil, and sell it as CBD essential oil.

How can you tell what’s good and what’s not? You’ve gotta find a vendor you can trust.

For starters, your vendor should always furnish lab reports for the products they sell. This will give you an overview of the presence of toxins or pesticides present in their supplements. If the CBD wasn’t grown in a way that prioritizes quality over profits, you’ll read about it in a lab report.

You should also buy from vendors whose products are organic. This is important because organic products are not legally allowed to contain synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

In the unregulated world of wellness supplements, having a standard of quality like this is priceless. Buying organic will drastically increase your chances of buying high-quality CBD essential oil.

Finally, read the reviews. If your vendor’s customers are overwhelmingly happy, it’s probably because the products work as advertised. It also means that the vendor stands behind their products and will be there to talk if something is wrong.
