Do Your Pets Have An Endocannabinoid System?

Do Your Pets Have An Endocannabinoid System

Even your puppy can enjoy the layered functional benefits of CBD. Here are some facts about what the ECS does and how it connects you and your pet!

By: Jon Huffman-Eddy

Chances are, if you’re reading his article, you have a furry friend or two. They might even be staring at you right now, melting your heart with their big, loving eyes. What are they thinking? That’s pretty hard to tell, unless you and your pet know each other really well. We’re not ruling out the possibility that the two of you have full-on conversations about your feelings, favorite foods, TV shows. After all, they’re our best friends for a reason.

It might not come as a surprise that physiologically, we’re not so different. Obviously, we don’t look similar, but the internal compositions of dogs and cats are actually quite comparable to our own, especially when it comes to the brain and the way it interacts with our central nervous and immune systems. Just like us, cats and dogs have a brain stem, cerebellum, cerebral cortex, amygdala, pineal gland and a list of additional brain components that we also possess.

What about an endocannabinoid system? Do pets have that, too? The short answer is, yes. If you’ve ever noted the layered functionality benefits of CBD in your own life, you can rest assured that the receptors in your body that make that particular magic possible exist in your pets as well. We’re not just talking about dogs and cats, here; it’s harder to find an animal that doesn’t have an endocannabinoid system than one that does. Lizards, sea urchins, fish and even leeches have been shown to have one. Though we should mention, the products we at CBDfx offer are specifically formulated for dogs and cats.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

If you’re wondering what the endocannabinoid system actually is, we’ve got you covered. It’s one of those terms that gets thrown around a lot; it has the term “cannabinoid” in it, which we know is connected to hemp and cannabis, but what’s this system made up of? Well, it’s actually composed of a few other systems in the body, all of which come together to create an even larger, collective system.

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system, while the peripheral nervous system is made up of quite literally everything else. Both systems are integral to many of our bodily functions, and they are also both an important aspect of the endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short.

Another component of the ECS is the gastrointestinal tract. This is the part of the body responsible for digestion and nutrient extraction. Food is broken down and either used as energy or stored as excess fat, all thanks to the gastrointestinal tract.

The final essential part of the ECS is the immune system, which is essentially the body’s defense against suspicious or unusual agents. When unrecognizable substances enter the body, the immune system protects against the so-called invasion and fights off potentially dangerous materials.

Altogether, the ECS regulates a number of bodily functions, including balance and coordination, activation/suppression of appetite, heart rate and mood regulation.

CBD for Pets

What’s CBD going to do to my pet?

If you’re looking into which products are best for your pets, one thing that is important for you to do before using any sort of hemp oil product on your pet is to ensure that the oil used has little to no THC in it. Pets, especially dogs, are highly sensitive to the principal psychoactive component of marijuana: the THC molecule. This sensitivity, however, does not apply to the active ingredient in hemp, so your first step in identifying the right product for your pet is to ensure that it is sourced from industrial hemp. Industrial hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, well below the threshold of feeling its effects and interacting with the ECS.

If you decide to order anything from us at CBDfx, you can rest assured that we use the same exact CBD oil in our pet blends that we do in those designed for humans, which is thoroughly tested in order to ensure that the 0.3% benchmark is always respected. That means it’s 100% organically grown industrial hemp, only containing the goodies that you’ve come to love.

Certain types of pet food and treats can even be used to train your animal to perform certain tasks. If you’re running low on either of these or want to shake things up and give your pet something new and tasty to try out, give them some CBDfx Pet Tincture! Our tincture’s smooth formulation is perfect for your pet, and you’re guaranteed to get countless uses out of each bottle!

How much CBD should I give them?

As with anything you give to your pets, it’s important to take into account how large they are. You wouldn’t treat your 10-pound calico cat the same way that you would treat your 65-pound golden retriever, and the same logic applies to how much CBD to give them. We’ve integrated that same thinking into our line of pet tinctures. These offer a high bioavailability, and you’ll find them in three different concentrations for small, medium and large breeds.

The strength of the CBD needed (500mg, 1000mg, and 1500mg) will depend on the dog.
